education: professional intern company>> expectations
what is
expected of participants:
Internships
at Lost Nation are full time positions.
- The work week is Tuesday-Sunday (except for turn-arounds and load-ins when the week can be Monday-Sunday).
- Since this is a demanding “full immersion” experience, taking on additional work outside of the internship is difficult, and permitted only in cases of need.
- After an initial orientation period, LNT interns can expect to assume staff level responsibilities under the direct supervision of the Co-Artistic Directors, Technical Director, and/or Company Manager.
- At Lost Nation everyone does a little bit of everything within three areas of focus: performance, technical, and/or management.
- Interns can also expect to perform basic, everyday tasks for the benefit of the theater, such as answering phones, running errands, creating mailings (copying, cutting, stuffing, folding, labeling), poster runs, cleaning, taking out trash, sorting screws, salvaging lumber, busking activities, etc.
- Administrative interns also assist with box office duties
These tasks are not the primary focus of the internship, but are essential for the smooth operation of the theater. Internships are for individuals with stamina and ensemble spirit who desire a challenging practical experience in the real world, and for those who are willing to devote their full energies to the internship.
The intern/apprentice ensemble participates in the running of the entire summer season, including the mainstage shows, Late Nite Cabarets (for intern/apprentice showcasing in particular), play readings with the Vermont Playwrights’ Circle, education programs (like the Youth Theater Lab), and special outreach events (such as The Independence Day Parade, shows or workshops for low-income day cares, nursing homes, rehab centers).
We see our program as an intensive immersion experience bridging
the worlds of academic or community theaters and professional
theater.
- Apprenticeships are unpaid positions.
- Interns receive a stipend ranging from $50-$125/week based on experience and responsibilities.
- One or two higher-level internship positions with commensurate compensation are available.
- Housing consists of a bedroom in a community member’s home with access to cooking, bath, and laundry (if available) and “common rooms.”
- Private bedrooms are the norm, but sometimes sharing a room with another intern/apprentice is required.
- Housing is no further than twenty minutes away.
